Chickens are usually one of the first types of animals people add to their hobby farms and homesteads. We got our first chickens in 2017 when we lived on a half acre. Clayton built us an amazing coop within our raised bed garden area and it was quite the perfect backyard homestead set up. Our only regret with chickens was not getting them sooner! We loved raising those first baby chicks and patiently waiting for the first egg.
When we moved to the farm in August 2018, we needed to build a coop just big enough for the chickens to have somewhere to roost at night since we planned on free ranging them on the property during the day. We utilized an unused corner of the feed room in the barn to build out a coop that would get our current flock of then 8 hens moved to the farm and give us more time to plan a bigger coop. We built our awesome Horse Stall Chicken Coop in January 2019 for our main flock so now this smaller coop serves as a grow out coop for chicks after the brooder stage and before they join the main flock.
We absolutely love having chickens and they are truly an integral part of our farm. We love watching them free range around the property and interact with each other and us. The fresh eggs really are just a bonus!
Our primary goals for the chickens were to have a rainbow flock with many different breeds and a variety of egg colors. We have definitely achieved that goal this year and now we are setting our sights on breeding for our own hatching eggs and chicks.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Now, I am the least mushy gushy person out there so this day can come and go and it doesn’t make any difference to me. My husband, however, is the most romantic, lovey dovey, falls for all the Hallmark holidays, sentimental love ever, so he is all about days like this even…
